![]() ![]() Since the 2000s, historical methods have largely functioned in service of a scientific ideal of engineering education research. Walter Vincenti's (1990) studies of aeronautical knowledge, Louis Bucciarelli's (1994) pioneering inquiry into the practices of engineering design, and, more recently, Donna Riley's companion text Engineering Thermodynamics and 21st Century Energy Problems: A Textbook Companion for Student Engagement (2011), also relates the history and theory of thermodynamics to contemporary environmental issues and encourages students to investigate the cultural conditions under which the first and second laws of thermodynamics were developed. Seely's article illustrates three distinct but not inseparable ways in which engineering education researchers use.
